You may be driving your daily commute in Worcester or taking your kid to soccer practice, when suddenly you are rear-ended by a speeding driver. Rear-end collisions often cause a neck injury commonly known as “whiplash.” The following is an overview of this condition and complications that can arise.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when a person is struck by enough force that it causes their neck to move back-and-forth rapidly. While sometimes it is immediately known that you have suffered whiplash, it can sometimes take a few days for the injury to manifest itself.

Some symptoms of whiplash include pain and stiffness in the neck, feeling more pain when you move your neck and a decrease in the range of movement in your neck. Other symptoms of whiplash include headaches, and pain or numbness in your arms, upper back or shoulders. Fatigue and dizziness are also symptoms of whiplash. Whiplash can also cause blurred vision, tinnitus, difficulty sleeping and concentrating, memory issues or even depression.

Whiplash can have a long-lasting impact

While sometimes whiplash can be treated with pain medication and exercise, leading to recovery within a few weeks, sometimes the injury is serious enough to have long-term complications. For example, a person might experience chronic pain for months or even years following the initial injury. If it is your second or subsequent whiplash injury, if you have existing low back or neck pain or if the collision was caused at a high speed, you may be more likely to experience complications from whiplash.

Seek help following a whiplash injury

While sometimes whiplash can be treated with pain medication and exercise, leading to recovery within a few weeks, sometimes the injury is serious enough to have long-term complications. For example, a person might experience chronic pain for months or even years following the initial injury. If it is your second or subsequent whiplash injury, if you have existing low back or neck pain or if the collision was caused at a high speed, you may be more likely to experience complications from whiplash.
