Hit-and-run accident results in serious personal injury

Most Massachusetts residents know that honesty is the best option, especially in the case of a serious error or accident. Unfortunately, not everyone follows this line of thought. This seems to be the case following a recent hit-and-run accident involving a car and a pedestrian, in which the pedestrian suffered significant personal injury and the driver later allegedly attempted to mislead investigators.

The incident happened on a recent Wednesday evening at an intersection when a vehicle hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The 40-year-old man was transported to a Boston hospital with serious injuries. When police arrived, in addition to the victim, they found only a passenger side mirror that appeared to be from the vehicle that struck the man. The driver had fled from the scene.

Based on the parts number on the mirror, officers determined the likely make, model and color of the car. Following an area-wide search for that type of vehicle, they found one in a neighbourhood near the crash site. Police concluded that the vehicle appeared to have been involved in a pedestrian accident, based on a missing passenger side mirror and damage to the windshield and front end of the car on that side. A 23-year-old woman was identified as the driver, and during the police interview, investigators allege she attempted to mislead them. She has been arrested and faces arraignment in court.

The driver now may face charges, including leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, knowingly misleading police and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The injured man and his family now likely face unexpected expenses, such as medical costs and loss of income. If it appears driver negligence caused the accident, separate from any criminal charges, this man may consider consulting with a Massachusetts personal injury attorney to discuss options for legal recourse against the driver and any separate vehicle owner.
