Tips on preparing for an appointment with a divorce attorney

Those in Massachusetts who find themselves entering the new year with thoughts of ending their marriage are not alone. In fact, for one reason or another, the first working Monday of each year brings an annual spike in the number of people making appointments to seek the counsel of a divorce attorney. Before such an appointment, there are several steps an individual can take so that he or she is as prepared as possible.

The first is gathering whatever financial information they can. This includes bank statements, credit card bills, paystubs and even the last tax return. Of course, one may wish to obtain a complete summary of the previous year's finances until late in January or even into the following month; it never hurts to get a head start.

Other tips to consider include educating oneself on the basics of divorce in Massachusetts so that individuals can arrive at their appointments with a list of questions and concerns specific to their situations. While social media websites can be a source of information, advisors recommend individuals considering divorce might be better off taking a break from such sites. If a break is unrealistic, divorcing couples – or even those just contemplating separation – may wish to at least avoid any discussions or comments about the status of their marriages.

On a more personal note, individuals may benefit from taking the time to make a list of their goals, what they'd like to accomplish in the aftermath of the divorce and what they're hoping to achieve. Trying to focus on the positive and the long-term may help make the more stressful interim – the divorce proceedings themselves – easier to get through. While every divorce is different because every relationship is different, with these preparatory steps and the counsel of an experienced family law attorney, this can be the first step toward a brighter, happier future.
