Child custody case delayed for father in the Navy

In a case that has drawn attention all over the United States and in Massachusetts, a Navy father is fighting for parenting time and child custody of his daughter, who is 6 years old. A court hearing for the child custody case was scheduled during a time when the father would have had to miss it because he was being deployed to sea. The father requested that the judge delay the case so that he could attend the hearing.

A woman who heard about the story was sympathetic to the man's cause and started a petition requesting that the court grant a delay in the hearing. The petition was posted on the site change.org as well as other social media sites and generated more than 12,000 signatures. The judge granted the delay, and the court hearing has been rescheduled for October. The ruling pleased the individual who began the petition because she felt that men who serve the country often face injustice. Even though the woman had not met the family, she wanted the courts to be understanding of service men’s obligations.

The father already has custody of his daughter, but he wanted to be available for the court hearing. His ex-wife is filing for custody of the child. The pair is still dealing with some issues regarding the mother's parenting time.

Child custody battles can be emotionally challenging for divorcing parents. For people who are in the military, their military commitment adds another obstacle to their custody battles. In cases where a parent who serves in the military has scheduling conflicts, a Massachusetts court can assist the family in getting a fair case.
