Divorce rate in Massachusetts is one of the lowest

The divorce rate in Massachusetts is one of the lowest in the United States. A study shows that Northeastern states such as Massachusetts have lower divorce rates for men. Several southern states, on the other hand, have divorce rates that are higher than the national average.

The recent U.S. Census Bureau report examined marriage and divorce in the nation by looking at marriages and divorces among Americans above the age of 15. Southern states have higher divorce rates because they also have higher marriage rates. In southern states, it is more expected for men to be married versus northern counterparts.

Norther states like Massachusetts and Connecticut have lower divorce rates in part because people are waiting longer to get married due to education and career goals. The increase in age of people getting married in Massachusetts is because there are more higher education opportunities and wider acceptance of living together before marriage. In 1970, the median age to get married was 22.5 for men and 20.6 for women. In 2009, the median ages for marriage were 28.4 for men and 26.5 for women.

Even though the divorce rate is lower that the national average in Massachusetts, it can still be a stressful time when two people decide to divorce. When a couple decides to divorce, it is important that they understand the legal process of a divorce, can deal with the impact and find comfort with their decisions. This may require a thorough research of their rights under the law and, in some cases, working together for an amicable split. In instances where they cannot work together, a family law judge may be able to make decisions on how to split property or child custody arrangements.
